William served as a private in Company E 29th Alabama Regiment. He was captured near Nashville on December 15, 1864, then transferred to Camp Douglas, Illinois on December 20, 1864, arriving there on the 23rd. He was discharged from Camp Douglas on June 19, 1865 at the end of the war.

In his pension application, William stated that he did not desert the services of this State, or leave the Confederate States, "but did go home without leave one time after having been in the war for 2 years, [he] did not remain at home but for a short time while [he] voluntarily returned to his command and remained in the active service until captured; [he] then remained in prison at camp Douglas, Illinois for the balance of the war...[he] is now about 70 yr. old and not able to work, [his] health is not good."

William Zachariah Isbell III was age 9 in the Revolutionary war. He bought land in Sevier Co., in 1796. Married Sarah. According to voter registration records, a Z. Isbell and Sarah Isbell(e) were living in Jackson Co. in 1830. The census records at that time only listed the head of household, and age range of others- not by name. Parents: Jason ISBELL.

In 1772 there was a Zachariah Isbell who was a member of the Watauga Association Council in the Watauga settlement in what is now Elizabethton, Tennessee. In May 1772 the first Constitution in North America was written by the people of the Watauge Settlement and called the "Articles of Watauga Association." No copies were preserved.

This called for an assembly of 13 "commissiomers" elected by the people to formulate laws. These commissioners in turn elected and appointed a committeeof five with judicial and executive authority for administrativethe government of the settlement. The first five men appointed were Zachariah Isbell, John Sevier (first Gov of Tennessee), James Robertson, Charles Robertson, and John Carter. All of these 13 men were also present at the Battle of King's Mountain.

Zachariah took part in the purchase of East Tennessee lands from the Cherokee in 1775 and was member of the Council and signer of the Watauga petition asking for annexation of the "Washington District", which included all of modern day Tennessee, to North Carolina July 1776. The washington District was named Washington County and as stated before included all of present day Tennessee.

He was one of the 27 magistrates first appointed in the new Wasington County in Novembver 1777. In early 1778 Washington County was divided into 7 regions and Zachariah Isbell was appointed as one o fht e 7 magistrates to make returns of taxable property. He was also a justice of Washington in 1778 and a signer of the Halifax petition.

He served with Col. John Sevier and the "Overmountain Men" in the Battle of King's Mountain on October 7, 1780.

He was appointed, along with John Sevier and Jesse walton as commissioners to confiscate the properties of Tories in Washington County, Tennessee. Parents: Zachariah ISBELL and Elizabeth UNKNOWN.
